Vitamin E Doses for Dogs and Cats

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin stored in the liver.Like other fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K, if one exceeds optimal doses, the potential for long-term toxicity arises; therefore more caution needs to be used when giving fat-soluble vitamins.More is definitely not better.

Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant.It is useful in preventing and slowing the development of cataracts, heart conditions and other muscle disorders; chronic skin problems, immune mediated disorders.

The following doses have been taken and modified from Dr. Wendell O. Belfield’s book “How to Have a Healthier Dog”. More is not necessarily better. The ranges suggested may have to be adjusted inpidually. If your dog or cat is at the lower end of the weight range, we would suggest using the lower dosage.Should you pet run into health difficulties, please consult your veterinarian.Vitamin E is best absorbed when given with meals.

Small Breeds – Up to 20 lbs (9kg)

Medium – 20-50 lbs or 9kg –22.8kg

Large- 50-100lb or 22.8 – 45kg

Giant – over 100lb or over 45 kg

100-200 IU once daily

200-400 IU once daily

400- 600 IU once daily

For example, for a 10 lb dog or cat, we would suggest a 50 IU vitamin E dose given once daily. For a 50 lb dog, 200 IU of vitamin E once daily would be a good starting dose. For a 100 lb dog, 400 IU of vitamin E once daily is recommended.

Vitamin E

Vit E Doses for healthy dogs and range from 100-400 IU once or twice daily by mouth depending on size. Dosage for unhealthy dogs will vary with size, definiency, medical condition, other drugs administered, etc. Consult your veterinarian. Immune-mediated skin disease often requires 400-600 IU twice daily.

Cat dose recommendation vary from 50-100 IU per day or 50 IU 2 times daily.
